2008 Walden Chamber Players

Young Artist Competition

 

The Walden Chamber Players Young Artist Competition is held annually to promote and encourage young musicians from the Newton area interested in the performance and study of chamber music. The winner will perform in a public concert with the Walden Chamber Players and receive a cash prize.

Eligibility—The competition is open to any string or wind players who reside in Newton and who have not yet graduated from high school as of May 16th, 2008.

Prize—The winner will perform with the Walden Chamber Players in a public concert in Newton in the fall of 2008 and receive a $500 cash prize. The winner will be expected to perform the selected chamber work in its entirety and to be available for rehearsals in the fall of 2008. The cash prize will be awarded at the time of the performance. A runner-up will also be selected and will be asked to perform if the winner is unable. All decisions of the judges are final.

Requirements
Preliminary Round—Friday, May 16th, 4:00 – 7:00pm
All applicants should be prepared to play 2 contrasting selections from the standard solo repertoire. These may be two separate works or contrasting movements of a larger work.

All applicants should provide their own accompanist. Memorization is not required. Finalists will be selected after all preliminary auditions are completed and finalists will be notified by phone. Contestants who are not selected for the final round will be contacted via email and audition comments from the judges will be provided.

Final Round—Saturday, May 17th, 6:30-8:30pm
No more than 5 contestants will be advanced to the final round and asked to play the selected chamber work for their instrument (see below) with members of the Walden Chamber Players. This round will be open to the public.

The winner and runner-up will be announced at the completion of the final round. Judges will provide written comments for all finalists.

Jury—The Jury will consist of members of the Walden Chamber Players.

• violin—Claude Debussy – String Quartet – 1st movement (violin 1 part)
• viola—Johannes Brahms – String Quintet in G – 1st and 3rd movements (viola 1 part)
• cello—Franz Schubert – String Quintet - 1st movement (cello 1 part)
• double bass—Gioachino Rossini – Sonata No. 3 for Strings – 1st and 3rd movements
• flute—W.A. Mozart – Flute Quartet in A Major – 1st movement
• oboe—Benjamin Britten - Phantasy Quartet (complete)
• clarinet—W.A. Mozart – Clarinet Quintet – 1st movement
• bassoon—François Devienne – Quartet for Bassoon and Strings – 1st movement
• horn—W.A. Mozart – Horn Quintet – 1st movement
